Hobzys Photography Hobby

So in Jan of this year, i picked up the cheapest mirrorless camera on the market. I got an entry level r50 canon with the crappy kit lens of 18-45 for 1k.

I always wanted a real camera camera as i saw what Donk/GS8 could do with theirs when it came to car photography. Ive also had a passion for imagining since i was a kid i enjoyed play around with those instant cameras and Polaroids.

So i totally went down a rabbit hole on youtube/books/google researching the shit out of the exposure triangle, f stops, bokeh, etc etc. $4000 bucks later, ive completed my camera bag and ive picked up a 100-400mm (5.6-8), 18-50 (2.8 constant) and a 10-18 (2.8 constant). Along with a travel sirui tripod, ND/Polarizing/UV filters and a peak design strap because im a retard a 100 dollar straps make sense in the camera world.

Images below

I hate fucking birds. But there isnt much else to take photos of in Richmond. I was thinking of doing some street photography in Richmond but my cheapie camera isnt weather sealed. In hindsight i wish i would have not bought such an entry-level camera and instead gotten a weather sealed and internally stabilized camera body so i could run lower ISO and faster shutter for low light. Still happy with the APSC crop factor though, i dont think going full frame would be that much help. Also really enjoy the small / light R50 vs a full frame camera.

Next step is to actually go hiking, and climb a lousy mountain so i can get some real landscape shots. Im going to Lighthouse park on friday to shoot, weather be damned. Also looking forward to taking a trip this summer to banff or calgary and shoot some wildlife along the way.

I'm no photography expert, but those are great photos to a casual viewer like me. I also fully expect you to be amongst the ah baks doing photography by Iona Beach in the near future :lol

I went down a similar rabbit hole right before COVID with a full-frame camera, which only intensified once lockdown happened (GAS syndrome). Like you, I was also shooting birds and cars.

Please make sure you protect your camera + lenses if it's raining!

N.V.M. 03-12-2025 04:46 PM

you hate birds? that's all I shoot, lol.

Matsuda 03-12-2025 04:57 PM

I'm actually going to get out of photography a bit...in terms of sell off a bunch of gear as I don't shoot as much anymore lol. I have too many cameras too =(

List them here and give RS 1st dibs on your used equipment :wooha:.

I’ve gone into full old man mode now. Photography is kinda omega boss level geriatric.

noclue 03-12-2025 06:50 PM

Aging RS demographic, from cars to bird watching.
You can compete with the old dudes at iona pier with the massive lens and camera setup from leica $$$$

I daubbled for a bit before having kids. The DSLR has been gather dust for the last 4 years and I'm debating just selling it. Everyone is moving to mirrorless, it's lighter and easier but I hate the digital viewfinder.

Bird Photography is a dangerous hobby. I had a friend who started like you. Next thing I knew was him dropping 20k on a 600mm telephoto bazooka. “I can’t get close enough to the birds”. And yes, he doesn’t like birds either.

spoon.ek9 03-12-2025 07:43 PM

hatefully taking photos of birds sounds right up hobz' alley :lol

Badhobz 03-12-2025 08:31 PM

I mean I rather shoot naked blondes like heff did, but those days are gone.

Birds are really not my thing, every time I shoot one I kinda wanna see it fried in oil and served to me by the chicken lady. Makes me hungry looking at that eagle. I’m sure it fries up nicely. Wonder if it’s a white meat.

I got the wife involved too. She’s trying to out do me and she says I take lame photos.

i gotta say she’s pretty good. Due to her height (lack of) she gets some interesting perspectives. She also has this weird disney-esq bond with tiny woodland creatures. Bunnies, squirrels, etc.

She got these amazing squirrel shots.

Oh and she took this sunset photo too… it’s quite a bit better than mine. Composition, lighting, everything…. Stupid midget has a gift.

if you guys have any suggestions for places to shoot astrophotography / Milky Way shots / cumshots please let me know.

red kryptonite 03-12-2025 09:02 PM

Badhobz 03-12-2025 09:04 PM

wtf !?!!!! What an epic genre !!! I didn’t know this was a thing. Thanks broski

radeonboy 03-12-2025 09:10 PM

Great, now Hobz is going burn even more money on Lego sets :lol

For astro stuff you probably have to leave the city to escape the light pollution since you need to crank up the exposure - somewhere farther out like Porteau Cove and beyond.

red kryptonite 03-12-2025 09:11 PM

np! cant wait to see the pics

68style 03-12-2025 09:12 PM

I was so disappointed when Lego didn’t make that Iron Gisnt set even after it got enough votes.

red kryptonite 03-12-2025 09:16 PM

im disappointed they didnt make the og power rangers megazord but instead we got the stupid voltron

Hobz, have you thought about doing night time photography? Taking pictures of the moon during an eclipse on a clear night? Photos of stars and meteor showers?

There is a "blood moon" lunar eclipse on this Friday night starting at 11:30pm. Unfortunately, all the crappy weather of rainy clouds might block the eclipse.

I saw many photographers last year in May in Vancouver at Kits beach take pictures of the Northern Lights.

murd0c 03-13-2025 07:53 AM

I've always wanted to get into photography, I think it's a fantastic and very fulfilling hobby when you get that right shot. I should really look into getting a camera one of these days.

I've heard this quite a bit, even people who were in the hobby more when they were younger, who you would think would take pictures of their kids and stuff, just said carrying the camera in addition to everything else is too tough, especially when your smartphone takes such damn good pictures to begin with.

This is basically me with my FF camera gear - I sold it all last year and downsized to a simple Fujifilm setup. Otherwise the smartphone camera takes care of my photo needs - I'm more than happy to sacrifice absolute image quality & camera control for readiness to capture the moment with my smartphone.

This is the first year where I might skip the auto show. The exotis don't interest me, and I can see the other cars at the dealer when I'm curious.

whitev70r 03-13-2025 11:14 AM

you all need to play with 35mm film, build a dark room in your house, and develop your own negatives, and watch the picture slowly come to life in a bath of chemicals.

Forget this digital raw data file business
