Health trackers

Who has a watch/ring/band health tracker?

Whoop, oura ring, apple watch, garmin, fitbit etc

I don't wear a watch or ring normally. I don't want to wear a device like that and ideally would prefer a whoop type device.

I primarily want this for sleeping (sleep apnea etc). I don't plan on wearing it for working out but if I did a ring wouldn't be ideal.

The issue with the whoop is the monthly subscription. Have to renew after 12months as the initial subscription includes the device.

Same with the oura ring where you have to buy it and also the subscription but they are supposed to be one of the better options for sleep tracking.

Apple watch is an option, but again, don't want to have a watch and I don't have an Iphone.

Wasting your money for sleep apnea.
The only way is to sleep in a lab, or take home specific equipment from a test center.

Watch - Those are just marketing gimmicks for you to buy their shit. Same as those "50$ desk air conditioners" you see on temu

For sleep apnea, you have to see what you actually have. Some people have genuine problem with their breathing while they sleep and they need cpap to correct it. I went to the best sleep clinic in Taiwan when I was there last year as my snoring has been getting worse and I was feeling less energetic because of it.

The doctor ran a full test while I was sleeping there, and he said I was actually ok and cpap wouldn't help me much. He prescribed a head strap to help with my breathing as it's more about the muscles not relaxing/tightening as I needed as I age. Did that and it helped immensely.

Many sleeping doctors would just push a cpap to you because they make a lot of money of it. Thus, do find a good doctor if you are heading for one.

I wear a Fitbit Sense, and have the app on my phone to collect data.

I also wear a heart monitor when I work out on my rowing machine. when I'm done the rowing machine sends that data, plus my rowing stats to my Fitbit app.

I have a smart scale, and the app for that automatically records my weight, and sends it to my Fitbit.

now if I could get my BP machine's app to connect to my Fitbit...

Sounds like you snore on your back disrupting your sleep, could try nose magnets for the low cost of 15$

Sleep apnea is measured through a different device. Getting one of these health trackers is not going to give you an accurate assessment for sleep apnea. You'll get sleep data, but sleep apnea is a medical condition that needs a CPAP device for proper intervention.

Garmin has the best information for sleep and activities that are free.

Honestly, if you're not going to use it for activities, I don't think it's even necessary.

If you golf, get the Garmin Venu 3, as you get golf distance data + all other activity tracking + sleep tracking. If you don't care about Golf then you should look at the Garmin vivoactive 5, if you use a Sport Chek VIP code you can save about 25% right now.

I never understood the idea of the whoop, it's essentially a watch body without the benefit of a watch.

I think the only one that appeals to me is the ring as that seems kind of cool, but the subscription for it turns me off.

Your best bet is a garmin watch since you don't have an iPhone.

Mine is a bit more complex than that, but yeah, it's basically the same thing.

Alternative, he also gave me a pack of mouth tapes to keep in the wallet should I go out without my strap. They are 3M and work quite decent as well. But last I heard, it's banned here at least on Amazon. Haha. I had to source them from China.

as i mentioned i know expecting a device to track the apnea. I want to track what i heart rate and O2 do in the middle of the night. my heart rate apparently ski rockets and by o2 dropped significantly.

from people at my gym that have the garmins, they aren't good for heart rate tracking. he uses an external device he pairs with it. the garmins don't actually do that good of a job when you look at the comparisons. they are definitely better for the sports uses and GPS etc

FYI, just a HUGE tip for all for sleep apnea.

She was for sure suffering sleep apnea, but since she slept alone, it wasn't until a corp company trip sharing rooms, her roommate said to get tested.

Someone went in for a test and she was border line = won't cover for machine / treatment.

The tech said, come back with the results again, but this time, drink some wine before bed.
Results were off the charts and she got her machine covered by benefits.

I have a whoop.

pros:
- The information is pretty robust
- I do like the gamification of the stats if you have friends with it
- The journal feature is probably my favorite aspect which ties in your daily habits to the results
- Its the only watch I found that accurately measured my HR when working out. I used a chest strap for a while but its annoying. Most other watches didn't read past 145ish, but the whoop reads all the way to my max (185 lately).

cons:
- no time display
- subscription model

I purchased the year and don't plan to renew it as I don't feel I'm learning anymore. After a few months of experimenting with what I could change it doesn't surprise me anymore.

Just remember, if you get the oura ring you need to subscribe to the app monthly even after dropping 400-600 bucks on it...
