it all depends on how safe you feel your computer is. i've never had a virus scanner installed on my personal pc, and i continue to use it daily with internet/p2p/email downloads without incident. every now and then i'll run antivirus.com's free online scan just to make sure. the key is to have a good firewall/router setup, proper updates installed, and be smart so dont download porn images ending in .exe or .vbs
