Minolta leaving Canada sucked ass. All my equipment is Minolta.

You best bet is probably a Canon Rebel XT, 20D (this might come in a bit over $1500) or a Nikon D50/70 depending on kit lens.

If I were to buy a dSLR now, I'd save up a bit more and get a D200 or wait a bit more and see what kind of dSLR SONY & Konica Minolta are cooking up... I must say that I hate the menu-centric controls of Canons & Nikons.
