A DSLR can be a handy tool, but if you're going to be using it as a point and shoot then why spend all of the extra cash? You have to think about whether or not you need the features of a DSLR, or whether or not you have the time to learn how to use one properly.
Point and shoot's are so good these days (and comparatively cheap) that it might be a lot more convenient to just buy a good P+S. For one, they're ALWAYS much smaller. It's hard to fit a dslr and a lens into your pocket.
