if you do a lot of handheld, low-light shooting, i.e. near sunset or at night, then it'd be nice to have IS. I still don't think it's a neccessity to have IS on shorter focal lengths lenses but if your budget allows, why not.

I think if u're still unsure about spending money on an SLR, then it'd be better to stick with a P&S, but don't spend 800 bucks on a prosumer because for that money you might as well invest in an SLR.

You can always keep the point and shoot camera even when you get the SLR.... I still have my Canon A40 2mp camera from 4 years ago and it still works perfectly when I just need to take quick snapshots of things or whatever.

For a good P&S camera I'd go for something from Canon.... maybe the A610 or the S2 IS. Fuji makes good P&S cameras as well and they can use ISO1600, probably the only ones that let you do that at the moment. Check out the Fuji S5200 as well.
