Q&A

Q: Do Japanese games work on North American DS'?
A: Yes, they are region-free, however, if you choose to play multiplayer, they must be the same language.

Q: What is a flash / devkit
A: It's basically a copy of the DS and GBA cartridges and you can copy downloaded games onto them. Most of the GBA ones are just cartridges, while the DS devkits usually have expanded memory.

Q: I read that I also need a NoPass device with my flash kit, what do they do?
A: They basically trick the DS to load unsigned code from the GBA slot.

Q: I also heard that I could flash my DS? That would allow me to not need a NoPass device and save battery life.
A: Yes, it is called FlashMe, it's a firmware replacement that automatically boots up the flash kit. However, you need a NoPass device in order to flash it.

Q: How do I play on Nintendo WiFi?
A: You need to either have a wireless router or the Nintendo USB WiFi Adapter for the DS to connect to.

Q: Does WiFi work if I decide to buy a flash / devkit?
A: Yes, totally! However, some people have stated that you cannot host, but join.

Q: How can I watch movies?
A: You need a dev / flash kit in order to watch movies. Then you use a freeware program called Meteos to convert them. Alternatively, you can use MoonShell, in that case, you would have to convert your videos to DPG format. ( The only video format MoonShell can recognize.

Q: What is MoonShell?
A: It is like PogoShell for the GBA, a sort of operating system that allows you to listen to music, read text files, look at pictures, watch videos, etc.

Q: How can I watch movies? ( ALT )
A: You can buy an accessory called the GBA Movie Player and just stick in a memory card with the movie and watch them that way.

Q: Is there a brightness switch on the DS like the GBASP?
A: Sort of, but you have to access it from the main menu. The DS only has the option of on / off, while the DSL has 4 kinds of brightness.

Q: How backward compatible is the DS?
A: The DS can only run DS and Gameboy Advance games.

Q: What exactly is Pictochat?
A: It is an IM program built by Nintendo that lets you chat with other people within 100 feet of you.

Q: How many modes of multiplayer are there?
A: There are lots of multiplayer modes from being able to play with people right next to you to sharing one game between two people on two different DS'.

Q: What are the difference between back and frontlit screens?
A: Frontlit screens have the light in front of the screen, and vice versa. On frontlit screens, you can see the light if you hold it at a certain angle, however on the backlit ones, lighting is much more even and results in sharper graphics. The DS and 2nd Gen GBA / GBA:M have backlit screens, while the 1st Gen GBA:SP has a frontlit screen.

Q: Can I play older Gameboy games in multiplayer mode?
A: Nope

Q: Are some older GBA accessories compatible with the DS?
A: Sure, a car charger is one of them, but only for the older gen of the DS.
