Q: How to enter SELF TEST MODE?
A: Hold L+R and turn on the power. Press A to test every part of SuperCard. If there is a "error" display that your SuperCard broken

Straight from their FAQ. Just keep pressing A and it will go to a screen that tells you what firmware you have.

If you go to the first page of this thread, Benny tells you how to update the firmware. I believe 1.63 is the newest firmware. There is a new release for the Supercard software though. As for the whitescreen, you can try changing the options when you patch. I remember for StarFox Command, I messed around with the settings, like saving to the SuperCard ROM vs Saving to the SD card and it fixed the white screen problem.
