Generally, when you have a larger crowd of people you get a larger portion of the population. The bigger the portion of the population, the more average and not quite so thoughful people you will get ahold of. Think about the average shmoe for a second or two and you'll get what I'm half-assedly pointing at.
As for the intelligent discussion? Start something up and make it snappy, refreshing and thought-invoking. Then maybe you'll pull in some people who care to discuss such things to a certain depth. If you're going to complain, take some steps to counter the problem and encourage others to do the same by leading with your example.
