Best advice, go to a store and see how the cameras feel like in your hand.
Pick up a Canon 40D...and pick up a Nikon D80 (don't know if stores have the D90 in stock already).
Ergonomics, layout, menu gui, etc. Figure out which one you like better.
Really, if you're starting from nothing, you can't go wrong with either.
There's other brands too.. Sony.. Pentax..Olympus..
