Go get fitted at a running store! Personally, I have ran over 75 races, from 5kms to a full marathon, on pavement, on trails, on gravel, etc... and have tried and own a number of different running shoes. Saucony, New Balance, Puma, Fila, Asics, etc. But, no Nike's ever, untill I got a pair of Air Max Moto's, since they were extra wide width. (But they are never the 1st pair I pick to go running with) Personally, I've mostly ran in Mizuno's (Wave Rider 8, 9, 10, 11) and my current long distance fave are my Adistar Controls (4).
Yes, the prices at a specialty running store (Rackets and Runners, Running Room, etc) are a little bit higher, but their staff is very knowledgable. And I know for a fact, that if you buy a pair of runners at Rackets & Runners, and they don't work out for you, you can bring them back and try something else as long as they're in sellable condition, of course.
If you know exactly which pair of shoes you want, and want to save a little money, then head over to the States, I've always found the same models cheaper there...not too sure now, with the exchange though.
