VGA is the 15 pin connector between a desktop and a display (could be monitor or tv)
nowadays TVs have a VGA port built in; monitor's don't because standard def or even high def TV resolution can't compare to the resolution coming from the desktop.
an HD 1080p signal gives you a res at 1920 x 1080 so you might want a monitor that has approximately that res as its highest.
