I think you are confused with the bits with the Bytes.
Well, no I'm not. Believe me, I'm one of the people who would never confuse talking about Mb/s and MB/s.

Anyways, okay... real world speed for 802.11g can be as high as 22-26Mb/s... but there could be so many factors that can cause it to be slower. Nobody's going to be able to tell you with any confidence that a particular reason is behind it.

The only way you can even begin to investigate is to do a whole bunch of tests. Try using different PCs and laptops to see if the speed is any different. Maybe try changing the channel that your wifi is operating on.
