always warm-up and stretch before doing any heavy exercises.

when i hurt my back, it was hurting to the point where i couldn't even sit properly without having to adjust my posture. even hitting a little bump while driving made me twitch. i suggest you take time off, but if you must, then go light because any exercise you do will require your back muscles to work.
