i base my tips on how good service was. if the service was poor then i leave less. if it was good then i leave more. simple as that.
to that first commenter, i would have taken the tip he tried to give back only because he was throwing a fit that they didn't give enough. hey, if you don't want it--fine. clearly they didn't deserve it.
