On the west coast, especially cities like LA and Vancouver, half of those who drop a bucketload of money on clothing dress terribly. Tasteless $300 denim (that is not any better constructed than a $40 pair of Levi's) and brand-name $90 T-shirts (again, more or less same level of quality as a $25 t-shirt at any other retail outlet) purchased solely for brand name and appeal only to mind-numbingly impressionable women. That sort of money spent on clothing is wasted.

Someone who is truly stylish is able to dress well on a budget; it's easy to outdo the sensibilities of the above. It's then easy understand most people's negative reactions to those who spend a lot of clothing. Based on popular example, people spend money on clothing and still end up looking awful. Those who spend money on clothing but do not look like they do are generally those who truly possess style; you can't replace a bespoke suit and carefully chosen matching shoes and belt and a sharply fitting trenchcoat with H&M knockoffs, but a T-shirt and jeans is just a t-shirt and jeans.

My 2 cents, anyway.
