I went to Reifel on Sunday. I heard from the staff that a Sandhill Crane chick had just hatched in the morning, so I went to see the little guy. The nest is way out in the marsh on a little island. I kicked myself for not having the right gear, as all I had with me was the D3x and the 400mm f2.8 VR. It was really windy, so it was hard to get a decently sharp shot.
Here is a full-frame shot of the nesting area.
100% crop
100% crop. As you can see, there is another egg in the nest. The mother was turning the egg every few minutes. Hopefully, it will hatch soon!
It took it's first swim as we were watching. I will post that photo tomorrow, if I have time.
