Yes, that's why teams will front load contracts.
Darcy Hordichuk previously played for Nashville. Tennessee does not tax you on any wages earned so the first season Darcy signed with the Canucks (same year as when he last played for Nashville) he is not being taxed by the Canadian government, but still under Tennessee. When he plays his second season he will start paying taxes therefore the team will pay him more money up front.
