actually it is now proven that is not the case but either way you should wear one. Almost ALL hockey insurance do not cover dental if you hit your teeth and not wearing a mouthguard.

Best ones are the custom fitted ones but if you dont want to pay $100+ there are some standard fitting ones out there. Its hella uncomfortable at first but its well worth it
(esp men who are too proud to wear a full visor....):P
