On some level yea it would be, but I think the main difference is the Canucks didn't offer to pay him that salary rather they were forced to.
Just like when Kesler got his offer sheet amount, he was definitely over paid. But when he signed his new contract shortly after it was back to market price. So things have a way of working themselves out. I'm sure he was getting paid more than some of the Canucks at that time too.
