From what I've seen, upgrading the internals are quite easy as long as the case allows you access. Most laptops you can upgrade the RAM with ease, and the same with HDs. You can also swap CPUs and GPUs (a little less common overall). Of course vendors disapprove of it, and void your warranty, but for some brands like HP, there are no seals on the CPU heatsink, so upgrading the CPU will be a breeze.

The main thing is to not damage anything when taking the laptop apart, and being able to replace it with stock parts if you ever do need to send it in.
