I just did a complete format/re-install after 4years as things started to get buggy. I've got a slow athlon xp 2200+ with 512m ram and a geforce 64meg, (secondary comp) I just put xp pro corporate on it but I've got a few things. I installed free avg and my system idle process was running about 90% ecu, lagging up the system just at idle. I un-installed it and its good as new again so I was wondering if there is another antivirus worth trying. I dont want anything with spyware, or that pops up and bugs me every-day. Just something that runs in the background and leaves me alone. I also have this red shield in the right corner of my screen because updates is turned off. How can I make this shield go away!!

Anything else I should put on the system? I turned off RPC in the admin menu, updated windows media player, updates windows live messenger, etc but anything else I can do to speed up this out of date system?? Its not used whatsoever for games, just web browsing and storage for pictures.
