This seems to go against Gillis' philosophy of not signing ridiculous long-term contracts (like when the Sedins were signed) regardless of offsetting the cap hit. Personally, as long as they're under 35, I'm in favor of doing long term deals since it gives teams more wiggle room under the salary cap.
