The biggest one is why didn't Chris take the fuel with him near the beginning of the movie instead of hiding it in the shack? Movie would have been over before it started.

Sure he could have taken it with him, but Chris' rationale, as the character said, in the movie was that the entire slum was swarming with MNU guys and he would be invariably searched. Hence he told his friend to hide it at his place so they could take it later in the night. I'm sure the Aliens wanted to sneak off the planet not have a firefight in broad daylight.
