Sure he could have taken it with him, but Chris' rationale, as the character said, in the movie was that the entire slum was swarming with MNU guys and he would be invariably searched. Hence he told his friend to hide it at his place so they could take it later in the night. I'm sure the Aliens wanted to sneak off the planet not have a firefight in broad daylight.

Technically speaking he did make it back to his place, he could have stashed it in the ship. I don't think you can really avoid a firefight since the re-location was going to be an on-going process. MNU would've been around. At this point we are splitting hairs though, let's just say that would have been a really short movie if Chris made it out w/ the fuel lol!
