That's because it's EASY (especially with things like Vuze). Same reason Napster got so popular so fast back in the day: it wasn't so much because the music was free, but because it was dead easy for ANYONE. Type in a song or artist name, hit Search, click Download... bing, bang, boom. Also a big part of the reason iTunes is the #1 paid download source: Apple spent a lot of time making it EASY, especially in its integration with the iPod.
When everyone else was using Napster, I was using IRC with filebots. Go into a sharing channel, message the bots with search commands, then with download commands. Easy, IF you even knew what IRC was. Music, video, applications... all there.
