Vancouver Canuck defenceman Shane O'Brien has received a one-game suspension for spearing New York forward Sean Avery while both players stood at the end of their benches during a third-period melee Tuesday night.

O'Brien will sit out Thursday night's game in Minnesota against the Wild.

The league also suspended Rangers forward Dane Byers for one game and fined New York coach John Tortorella $10,000. Byers was assessed an instigator penalty at 18:50 of the third period Tuesday night in a fight with Vancouver winger Tanner Glass. A player identified as the instigator in a fight during the final five minutes of regulation time receives an automatic one-game suspension.
