I'm not sure to be honest. I've never used the 17-55, but buddy at work (who knows anything and everything when it comes to DSLRs, etc), says that this lens is super sharp, sharper than his 24mm F1.4 L. He even bought the lens himself. And this is a guy who uses mainly primes and has been doing this for ages. So that tells you something about the lens
