For me, I was able to get the nobles on my side, including letting the Elf slave traders go (which I didn't even have to do as it turns out). I won a duel against him, and was going to kill him but turned him into a Grey Warden instead. Alastair got pissed, and ditched me and I haven't seen him since
So now I have loghain instead of Alastair, which kinda sucks because I built Alastair to my liking
