If the dog is not paying attention to you, or he starts to walk too far ahead, tap him on his hind quarter with your toe so he feels it (not kicking, just like someone tapping you on your shoulder at a club to get your attention) and give him a simultaneous verbal correction like "HEY!!!" or "HEEL!!!". It will break his fixation on whatever he's looking at or smelling and get him to pay attention to you.
