i was going to suggest the prong collar too. we use that on my dog
my dog used to pull me a lot (he's 90lbs, i'm 120lbs), so we went to the trainer for a private lesson and she said that when your dog pulls or walks in front of you, the proper way to correct it is by doing fast and short tugs on the leash, not long tugs - long tugs causes the dog to tense up and become more alert, as if there is danger around. if the dog is far in front of you then a series of short fast tugs. Also, the prong collar needs to be high up on the dog's neck (it's more sensitive there).
And you're right about changing directions, it ensures that the dog keeps paying attention to you.
