I think its more of a comfort thing. I remember when the Canucks first played with their vintage jerseys in 2006, Lu got a new mask and blue pads to match the vintage jersey, he played the first period in the new pads but came out for the 2nd period with his regular pads because he wasn't comfortable in the new pads because they were too stiff and weren't broken in. He kept sliding too much around the ice with them because how new the finish was too.

For most players, if they are going to update their equipment, they usually do it over the summer and training camp so it gives them time to break in the gear so they feel comfortable. LOL one of the Canucks acutally goes thru 9 pairs of gloves a game that he rotates because of how much he sweats, but the gloves are all broken in from training camp and he won't get new gloves till the end of the year because he finds new gloves too stiff that he can't get a good feel for stick handling.
