in 38 games, Dallas is 14-8-10 for 38 points.
over 25% of their points have come from LOSSES and over half the time they have lost, they have gotten points from it anyway. if there were no loss points, their win-loss record would be 4 games under .500, instead of 6 games over. and instead of being in the playoffs, they would be in the bottom 3 of the conference.
loss points are garbage, especially with the way the point structure currently is.
it should be:
regulation win = 2pts. regulation loss = 0pts
OT win = 2pts. OT loss = 0pts
SO win = 1pt. SO loss = 0pts
you lose, you fuckin lose.
the league wants to increase excitement in games. but with the way things are, teams can sandbag thru the regulation and especially OT because they know they are guaranteed a point, and might luck out with a SO win for 2. if the point system was how i described, the risk of not getting that 1 point by getting to OT would encourage both teams to earn a W.
3 point games are also ruining the league and can make the difference between making and missing the playoffs. imagine if calgary (our last game of the season) was in 8th in the conference and was 2 points up on vancouver, with 3 more OT losses, but we had 1 more win than them. all they need to do is play to not lose in regulation, and they're in and we're out.
