I kept 2 things in mind when I call retentions:
1. They deal with people complaining all day and threatening to quit if they don't get a better deal.
2. They can't give you everything you ask for. On their computer they have options that may or may not be available depending on the month AND the customer. Therefore, they have limited control over what they can give you.
Having that in mind, I call in and am polite. I tell them what I have now, what I'd like to have added on or taken away. I don't threaten to leave, since that is a form of aggression and actually works against you.
