My experience: I bought a $10 cable from Superstore because I needed it right away and $10 is actually a reasonable price. I've been using it for 4 months now and constantly moving it to connect to other PS3's or 360's, it still works perfectly.

Snow, artifacts, and the like shouldn't be possible with digital connectors. However, the
build quality may differ slightly. Yes, it's just a cable tapped into a connector, but I've seen brand new out of the box digital cables crap out on either sound or video (and often both). I've had an HDMI and a 4-6 pin firewire cable do both on me. Sometimes you do get what you pay for. I will never advocate buying a Monster Cable from FS/BB, but sometimes those cheap cables will cut out.
