Just limit the amount of food they eat so they don't get too big.
The stink part is true if you don't maintain the tank (not difficult but you can't do absolutely nothing), and their shells shed large flakes. When I cleaned out our tank and dumped the old water into the toilet I was surprised at how much crap was in the water. It looked almost like diarrhea.
With that said, our pet RES is a cute but kind of dumb little bugger.
Other than the tank cleaning every 3 months or so, there's virtually no maintenance involved. They supposedly live 50+ years though, so get ready for a lifetime of feedings.
