Are you looking at doing large prints? I find that using the 40D is a great camera, that performs top notch. There is no need of upgrading unless your going pro. Get some good glass, and some fast primes. i.e. 24-70 f/2.8 L, 50 1.4, etc.
btw how is the 17-40 on the 40D, i am looking at getting that as my next lens.
