I had one of the first iPods and when it came out I thought it was a good idea just cause it was a portable hard drive with a EXTREMELY simple user interface and a way bigger capacity than other competing mp3 players at the time. For me it was either an iPod or an samsung YPP mp3 player. I didnt think it would changer the world but it was still an easy call since it allowed me to being my entire music collection with me, and navigate all the songs easily.
The iPad however does nothing new. It takes old technology and just repackages it. I guess to play my own devils advocate you could say that about the iPod but the interface was new and that was a deciding factor, plus at the time, there was no viable competition.
