here we go again with the mac vs. pc's .... what a fucking tool.
the 'news' and fact was that macs are in fact easier to hack into and their security holes are bigger than pcs, in the state that the 'news' (couple months-1yr ago, i forgot) was.
however, the security expert, or company, also stated that pc's are targeted a lot more by far. i have a mac and pc's, and i always had av on the pcs, and never on the mac's.

i forgot where, but on revscene or beyond.ca someone really advocates the use of cloud-based anti-virus apps because of their ability to actively detect rootkits or something like that. i like nod32 and MSSE. watever.
from simply browsing, or even d/l the occasional movie or mp3, i don't think it'll be a problem on osx. If you start torrenting cracked releases (that aren't verified) ur opening a whole world of unknown for urself. then maybe an av is needed.
