It basically increases sensitivity without losing accuracy. Anything above 2000 is kind of useless, at least in my experience. I suppose you could crank up the DPI and lower the sensitivity all the way, but even then your mouse cursor will be everywhere.
Unless you're on a ridiculously high resolution monitor, of course
