Normally hardware upgrades occur when you renew your contract. So yes, it would require you to renew or you could just pay full price (ie without plan/contract).
As for the 6 months aspect, it could be likely because when you upgrade, you're doing the contract at the same time. It would be ideal to do both at once to save on cost for both your plan and your phone.
