Having two programs open at once isn't really multitasking - you aren't doing anything with both programs, you just have them open sitting there. If the definition of multitasking were just to have two or more programs open at once sitting there, it wouldn't be hard to implement.
And the point about ebuddy - I use ebuddy all the time. The app allows for push data and messages to be sent to my iphone from the IM contacts, even if I'm in the middle of a game or watching a video. At that point, i have the option to respond or continue with whatever I'm doing, but I'm still getting messages, and my status is whatever I've set my status to be: online, away or whatever. Just because ebuddy isn't running in the background doesn't mean I'm not getting messages, or not able to respond to messages, or that it kicks me out of MSN or whatever IM i'm logged into.
