no, usb y cable combines 2 USB amp (5V 500ma) to make 5V 1000ma (1A).

Over amp is ok. device will only take whatever is necessary. Over voltage by over 10% of spec will fry the device.

Unless you have a y cable that's in serial connection + to -, most usb y is combining + on + and - on -.

iPod is a different story. It has circuit to monitor the voltage from 5V to 14v (possible different lead) to take firewire power as well
