I told him it's not the phone at fault, in fact us early adopters were screwed over worse. Well, op lost his 3G twice now after i rooted it so i can understand his frustration. Afaik they won't likely turn it off again since he's already called in twice. For the purpose you listed here, the Rogers Magic + suits your needs perfectly.
There's also reason to wait as 2.2 us coming out soon, and if you're buying a new android phone, might as well wait for it to come out. I wasn't sure about 2.2's details when you asked me but after looking it up, there is a lot of changes under the hood that I wasn't aware of. Basically, drastic performance optimization.
So I'd say just hold on to the Magic for now
