More connections does not necessarily mean faster downloads. If you have too many open connections, your router won't be able to handle it.

Start low, maybe around 100. If your download speeds are sufficient, leave it be. If not, increment the value by 5 or 10. Continue to increment until you don't see any discernible improvement in downloads speed. Honestly, I don't go about 100 and I do fine.
