How hot the temperature gets has nothing to do with lava rocks. It's all about the BTU output of your burner.
Even finding lava rocks these days is pretty difficult. The last time I used them was probably 15 years ago. They were notoriously bad for uneven heat distribution and flareups/grease absorption, they're old BBQ technology. Now it's all about heat diffuser design to keep even heat.
