As noted, lava rocks have nothing to do with how hot the BBQ gets. The whole purpose of them is to diffuse and even out the heat - instead of the flames directly heating the food, the rocks absorb the heat, spread it around, and then hold it longer, so it doesn't vary with the flame.
These days you see things like small ceramic bricks used for this.
