Taste the meat not the heat. Use propane.
The most important part of BBQ is the person manning it. We had an elcheapo $200 gill from Zellers for over 10 years and I made burgers, steaks, and smoked ribs and they all turned great. We now have a $500 Charbroil grill and it is better but not $300 better.
Also you don't need to turn of the propane when cooking. If I did that there would be no way I could cook 250 plus 1/4 burgers in 4 hours.
