It seems the only people that know who Green Latern is are those that are interested in comics, the rest of the general public (majority of the population) have no idea. I know 9 out of the 10 I've asked had no idea. I work on Smallville, a comic universe theme production and pretty much no one on the production knew who or what Green Latern is besides the writers who wrote in some references into our production and had our prop guys do some stuff up.
I would venture to say that there are only 2 comic characters that everyone knows of, Superman and Batman, then you got those that most know off like Xmen, then you have those that only comic fans know of like Green Latern.
