Photo editing ... So your photos aren't widescreen ? What's your point ? Guess what, that means you can have tool bars down the side, which means you can your work done quicker instead of going through menus all the damn time.
I don't know about you, but I actually like to get my work done quickly so I can spend my free time playing games. A widescreen monitor benefits both.

you actually end up with wasted space in the ribbon with 1920px width
most ribbons will show everything in just 1280px width
problem obviously is you have to scroll up and down a lot more often in widscreen vs standard aspect ratio. (and obviously you can't compare 1920x1080 vs 1280x1024, since one has almost double the pixel)
photo editing: well, a lot of the vertical space are already taken up by the program tabs, options, status bar...etc
and the vertical space is usually what restrict how big you can zoom the photos on the screen and still see everything.
I hate it when ppl talk about widescreen as if you only get more width, but totally ignore the fact that you lose the vertical space
